I mean, it's clearly not just archaeological interest; people like Henry schliemann were willing to go so far as to fake evidence to prove it. What are they trying to achieve?

They are trying to prove that Homer was not a fictional writer.
And those that fake evidence are trying to make a name for themselves and they got desperate.
